Earlier this year, Bunzl Canada announced that it would power up a pilot test for a greener way to deliver efficiency – with a compressed natural gas (CNG) truck. The technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions, decreases fuel consumption and also has a reduced engine noise level of an estimated 10 decibels.
Compared to diesel vehicles, CNG trucks emit between 70 to 95 per cent less carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter that contribute to the greenhouse effect and affect the ozone layer. There are between 2,000 to 5,000 CNG trucks in Canada and up to 90,000 operating in the United States. The 42 fueling stations in Canada, many of them in Ontario and Quebec, have made operating CNG along the key corridors more accessible.
At Bunzl, the CNG powered truck is just one of a number of high priority initiatives designed to reduce our environmental footprint and help our customers do the same. The truck is operating along one of our busiest routes along the Highway 401 corridor from Windsor to Montreal and is projected to reduce emissions by 25 per cent. Along with exploring alternative fuels, we continue to source a wide range of environmentally preferable product alternatives.
