Have you ever wondered about the bacteria that could be lurking on your grocery cart handle? A study conducted by the University of Arizona tested carts in five U.S. cities, and the results will definitely give you some food for thought on your next visit to the grocery store.
Harmful bacteria were found on 72 per cent of the carts, with over half of those testing positive for E. coli. The researchers concluded that these numbers indicate that shoppers are regularly exposed to bacteria that affect intestinal health, including pathogens like Salmonella and Campylobacter.
They also found that total bacterial levels on shopping carts are far greater than those found in public places like restrooms, airports, shopping malls and bus stations. E. coli were present in greater numbers on shopping cart handles than on other common surfaces like ATM buttons, escalators, diaper changing tables and restaurant tabletops.
